Rodobrás is a work by Virginia de Medeiros, a Brazilian visual artist who, for many years, has portrayed — in photos, videos and installations — travestis who live in Salvador, the capital town of Bahia. A main feature of Medeiros art as is a subtle and sharp transit between intimacy, on the one hand, and detachment, on the other. SPW has resorted to her art work to illustrate the brief note written about Judith Butler in Brazil (in Portuguese), a recent visit that began in Salvador, the exact same urban territory charted by Virginia de Medeiros documenting of travestis’ live worlds.

When speaking of the live worlds of Brazilian travestis we also strongly recommend our readers to watch the awarded video documentary Buttlerflies directed by Vagner Almeida. The video potrays the brutal stigma and discrimination experienced by young travestis and gay men in the poor outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.
