Alma López is a queer Chicana artist who lives in California. Her work has many varied expressions. But most principally it elaborates and re-signify the imageries the images of Mexican Catholic tradition. Her better-known work is Our Lady that illustrates this post Painted in 1999 it re-constructs and re-signifies the icon of the Virgin of Guadalupe as seductive Latina woman. The painting has triggered major attacks on the part of conservative Catholics. It is now known by the nickname Our Lady of Controversies.
