REDLACTRANS Statement on the assault of transactivist Alexa Hoffman

Portada Comunicado Barbados

From the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Trans people (REDLACTRANS) we reject the transphobic violent attack suffered by the national coordinator of Barbados, Alexa Hoffman and the inaction of the security forces to capture her attacker.

Alexa suffered an attack by a man who rented a room in her home and assaulted her violently causing cuts in her body and left her badly injured.

After the attack she gave notice to the local police, who send her to a hospital without taking concrete measures to capture her attackers even though she could identify them.

Marcela Romero, REDLACTRANS regional coordinator, stated “we believe it is fundamental that this violent situation will be further investigated by police and that justice acts against this clear attack to a trans woman. Alexa is a trans human rights defender in Barbados and we believe it is crucial that the State guarantees her security and of all trans people in the country. Unfortunately, Trans women from Latin America and the Caribbean cannot access the right to justice due to the stigma and discrimination that exists in police stations, ombudsmen offices and judicial.”

We accompany Alexa in her speedy recovery, we demand the State of Barbados to train the security forces in the human rights of LGBT people and the approval of a Gender Identity Law that guarantees the access to all rights.
