DEMOCRACIES IN DISPUTE: Explore the series and access the materials

In 2024, more than 64 countries will have elections at different levels*. These disputes are both electoral and about the meaning of democracies. They will trigger conditions of fierce battles over politics, but also narratives between a wide variety of actors, including populist and authoritarian forces that, over the past few years, have been instrumentalizing the concept, structures and practices of democracy to erode it from within.

Even within the progressive camp, notions of democracy are unstable, disparate and even contradictory, even as the caveats and limitations of the democratic regimes in which we practice our activism are widely acknowledged and criticized. Therefore, 2024 is a decisive year in that it confronts us with the paradox of having to strongly mobilize majorities to defend democracy, while not losing sight of the deficits and distortions of democracies as they exist today.

In this context, we from the Pending and Emerging Dialogues space, a joint initiative of five organizations working on gender, sexualities and reproductive justice issues in Latin America, believe it is important to have a moment to better understand the different national and regional contexts and perspectives.

Since May, we have been organizing a series of debates that bring together analytical and practical perspectives to help understand the political-electoral landscape of 2024. This is the Democracies in Dispute series. Three debates have already taken place, focusing on: Latin America, the United States and Africa. Others will be held until the end of the year.

Below you will find more details of each debate and you can access the different materials available**.
