The Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Bill violates human rights

“The draft ‘Anti-Homosexuality Bill’ introduced on October 14, 2009 in Uganda’s parliament would violate human rights and should be withdrawn immediately,” said a group of 17 local and international human rights organizations.  The measure would impose the death penalty for what it terms “aggravated” homosexuality, and it would criminalize the work of human rights activists and organizations.

The bill would also forbid the “promotion” of homosexuality—for example, by publishing information or providing funds or premises to groups.  Conviction could lead to seven years in prison.  The failure to report those who are known or suspected of being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender could lead to imprisonment of up to three years.
