The contested politics of sexual and reproductive health and rights: A special supplement of the journal Global Public Health By Nancy Worthington and M. Muñoz-Laboy* Global Public Health, a leading peer-reviewed journal distinguished by its global focus and concern for health inequalities and the social and cultural dimensions of health, has dedicated a special supplement to the research that culminated in the publication of SexPolitics. The supplement, entitled The Contested Politics of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, features condensed versions of six of the ten case studies that appear in SexPolitics: Reports from the Front Lines; these include Brazil, India, Peru, South Africa, Vietnam, and the World Bank. One of the goals of publishing in Global Public Health is to reach audiences who may not have otherwise known about the e-publication of SexPolitics. Each article in The Contested Politics of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights addresses sexuality identities and rights under a different political and/or economic order. Several themes, however, crosscut all six case study. One such theme is struggle: in the case of each study, social and political actors struggle against the influences of religion, biomedicine, and politics. Another theme is the state: even during a time a globalization, wherein the role of the state is being tested and undeniably transformed, the state still emerges as a force with which to contend. The Contested Politics of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights was celebrated along with the Spanish translation of SexPolitics (Políticas sobre sexualidad) at the SPW reception on August 4th, 2008. Special remarks were shared by Sonia Corrêa, Richard Parker, and Gloria Careaga. Complementary copies of The Contested Politics of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights were also made available at the SPW reception and at the Global Village.
