This session brought to the larger audience that was at 2009 IASSCS Conference a synthesis of the discussions held at the first Asia Regional Dialogue on Sexuality and Geoplitics, Hanoi, April 10-12 2009.
At this meeting, a group of experts from the region focused on four areas that are critical in the regional context: Sexualities in the Tech Era, the Politics of Viagra and Condom Promotion, Migrant Labor and Sexual Politics, and Negotiating Multiple Identities. Through empirical documentation of emerging ground-level trends and issues in these areas, participants sought to identify the specific actors and power relations propelling/caught up in these trends, unraveling the complex interplay of the institutions and processes of state and religion, economic development and science in the region, and identify the emerging issues, concepts and tools for policy interventions.
The Dialogue was organized by the Institute for Social Development Studies (Vietnam) Asia Task Force of SPW. SPW, chaired by Richard Parker (USA) and Sonia Corea (Brazil), is an international group of academics and activists with a common interest in monitoring the development of social policy debates focusing on sexuality at national, regional and global levels, and in advocating for the development of more informed policy debates.
