With the purpose of offering an opportunity for civil society to meet with States and States to meet with civil society organisations (CSOs) at once, UPR Info is organising from 29 March to 4 April 2012, in Geneva, “UPR pre-sessions”. These meetings were organized for the UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR) 13th Working Group session, which will be held from 21 May to 4 June 2012. As Brazil is one of the countries which will have its status of human rights reviewed in the UN UPR second cycle, the Brazilian Pre-session took place on April 2nd, with the contribution of Sexuality Policy Watch (SPW), the Brazilian Interdisciplinary AIDS Association (ABIA) and other Brazilian CSOs.
ABIA and SPW contributed to this Pre-session, presenting a short video which contextualized the debate on some recent aspects of human rights in Brazil, after the UPR reports were sent in November 2011. News regarding the sexual and reproductive rights and sexual politics, as well as episodes of setbacks, like the governmental ban of the Carnival campaign against HIV/AIDS to MSM, were highlighted.
SPW also written for the Brazilian Pre-session, in partnership with Nupef Institute and the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), and the support of ARC International, the note UPR Brazil Suggested intervention and recommendations – Internet and Human Rights, recommending, for instance, the urgent introduction of the Personal Data Protection Draft Bill for submission of the House of Representatives.
