Gender & Politics in Latin America

Under the framework of its Transnational Strategic Analysis program, SPW launched a new line of work in 2018. This project, called Gender and Politics in Latin America (G&PAL), involves a set of sequential and complementary activities.

In 2018, we translated to Spanish selected texts from “¡Habemus Género! La Iglesia Católica y Ideología de Género”, a special supplement published by the journal Gender and Religion in 2016.

In September 2019, we launched a set of videos summarizing the preliminary results of research into anti-gender policies in nine countries and the OAS. In February 2020, the final results of the studies were published.

In January 2021, the English summaries of the studies were compiled in the publication Anti-gender Politics in Latin America – Summaries of Country Case Studies, launched at the webinar “All Eyes on Latin America: Anti-gender politics through transnational lenses”. In September of the same year, the same publication was launched in Portuguese at a national seminar.

In March 2022, we launched the results of the new cycle of the project: a publication comprising eight studies that update the landscape of anti-gender policies since 2019 in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Uruguay, as well as in the OAS. This new research effort aimed to examine the intersection between the anti-gender and anti-abortion offensives that have developed in the region during the COVID-19 pandemic.
